Hurricanes Update. Power Play Shifts. Injury List Grows

The Carolina Hurricanes are navigating a pivotal stretch as injuries continue to reshape both the lineup and special teams. Two major absences now define this stretch. Seth Jarvis and Jaccob Slavin are both expected to miss a few weeks, creating significant holes up front and on the blue line.

Jarvis was injured during an overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on a tough non call involving Evan Rodrigues, who tripped Jarvis and sent him hard into the net. The collision resulted in the injury that has sidelined him and forced Carolina to rework its forward combinations and power play structure.

With Jarvis out, the Hurricanes have leaned into internal options, giving expanded roles to players who are earning trust through performance and consistency.

One of the biggest positives has been Jackson Blake. Now in his second year, Blake has not hit the second year wall that many young players encounter. Instead of fading as responsibilities increase, he has continued to elevate his game. Blake has four points in his last four games and looks comfortable playing faster minutes, attacking space with confidence, and handling meaningful power play responsibility alongside Carolina’s top forwards.

Veteran leadership has helped stabilize things offensively. Jordan Staal remains on the top power play unit, providing structure and a strong net front presence while allowing younger players to move and create around him.

The current power play alignment has Carolina rolling with the following look.

Power Play One features Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Jackson Blake, Jordan Staal, and Shayne Gostisbehere.

Power Play Two includes Alexander Nikishin, Nikolaj Ehlers, Taylor Hall, Bradley Nadeau, and Mikhail Stankoven.

At practice, Carolina skated without several regulars. Jarvis and Slavin remained out alongside William Carrier and Jordan Martinook. The Hurricanes practiced at Invisalign Arena, with attention turning to updates from head coach Rod Brind'Amour following the skate.

Slavin’s absence is especially impactful. He has played only five games this season, and Carolina desperately misses its star defenseman. His ability to control gaps, settle play, and anchor the defensive structure is difficult to replicate, particularly in late game situations where details matter most.

Line rushes again showed Blake skating with top players, including time alongside Aho. That deployment speaks to the trust Carolina is placing in him during this stretch.

For Carolina, this moment is about adaptability. Injuries are testing depth, but they are also creating opportunity. Blake is seizing his. Staal remains a stabilizing force. The Hurricanes now wait for reinforcements while adjusting in real time.

NC Sports Report will continue tracking updates as Carolina looks to stabilize, respond, and push forward through adversity.
