Greensboro Gargoyles Join the Ranks: Official ECHL Affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes

The ice in Greensboro is about to crackle with new energy.
The Greensboro Gargoyles have officially become the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and the AHL’s Chicago Wolves—a partnership that marks a new era for hockey in the region.

Slated to drop the puck for the first time in October 2025 at the newly upgraded First Horizon Coliseum, the Gargoyles aren’t just entering the league—they’re entering the spotlight.

A Three-Tier Hockey Partnership

This affiliation forms a powerful development pipeline:

  • NHL – Carolina Hurricanes: The top tier, where the region’s best talent competes on the biggest stage.

  • AHL – Chicago Wolves: The Hurricanes’ main farm team for honing near-ready NHL talent.

  • ECHL – Greensboro Gargoyles: The newest link, giving players a platform to sharpen their skills, adapt to the pro game, and earn a shot at the higher levels.

With this system in place, hockey fans in Greensboro will see future NHL stars at the earliest stages of their professional journey.

First Horizon Coliseum: The New Home of the Gargoyles

The First Horizon Coliseum is gearing up for the season opener with enhanced seating, modern locker rooms, and updated fan amenities. The city’s hockey faithful—some still nostalgic for the Greensboro Monarchs of the past—now have a new team to rally behind.

Building the Roster

The Gargoyles wasted no time making history:

  • Logan Nelson became the franchise’s first-ever signed player on July 30, 2025, bringing veteran ECHL experience and leadership to the locker room.

  • The organization also announced its inaugural hockey operations staff, led by Head Coach Scott Burt, along with key additions in coaching, equipment, and athletic training.

The message is clear: this isn’t a slow build—Greensboro is coming to compete.

Why This Matters for North Carolina Hockey

The Hurricanes’ success over the past decade has fueled a steady rise in hockey interest across the Carolinas. By planting a professional ECHL franchise in Greensboro, the sport gains deeper roots and offers fans in the Triad region a local team to support without traveling to Raleigh.

It’s also a win for player development. Prospects can now gain valuable ice time and adapt to the professional grind close to the Hurricanes’ home base.

Looking Ahead

When the Gargoyles hit the ice this October, they’ll do more than chase a puck—they’ll carry the hopes of a city ready to prove it’s still a hockey town. With the backing of the Hurricanes, the Wolves, and a community eager for the return of pro hockey, Greensboro’s newest team has all the ingredients for an unforgettable debut season.

Mark your calendars, hockey fans. The Gargoyles are coming. And the hunt begins October 2025.
